Prof. Oladipo O. Akinkugbe has in the past five decades played a prominent role in drawing attention to the increasing menace of Non-Communicable Diseases in the developing world. His efforts have been widely acknowledged internationally, and at the national level, he has served as Chair of Nigerian National Committee on Non-Communicable Diseases whose survey in the early 90s defined the magnitude of the problem by focusing inter alia on hypertension, diabetes and sickle cell disease.
Prof. Akinkugbe was the foundation President of the Nigerian Hypertension Society and the Nigerian Association of Nephrology. He has received the Searle Distinguished Award in Research and the Boehringer Ingleheim Award of the International Society of Hypertension for his extensive studies on Hypertension and Cardiovascular Diseases in black populations. He has at various times been Visiting Professor of Medicine at Harvard (1974-75), Oxford (1981-82) and Cape Town (1995).
